On Saturday April 12th at Small City Farm in Harewood we facilitated a free Basket Making workshop using English Ivy harvested from the Millstone river area at Bowen Park. Gabriola based Basketry Artist Christi York ferried over and led us through the basket making session. She helped us pick the best vines for baskets and sort them into spokes and “weavers” and guided us through the process of weaving out from 6 crossed spokes, creating a bend to separate the bottom of the basket from the sides, and finishing the basket sides by bending in the spokes. The weavers were so into the flow of the activity that many of them found it meditative and therapeutic. Some participants were inspired by the challenges the natural material offered and got further motivated to learn about this creative land healing practice.
